Treatment for Mange in Dogs
September 8, 2009
One of the most common health problems that canines suffer from are skin diseases. Dog mange is a common and infectious skin condition that is curable when diagnosed early. They say that prevention is better than treatment. However, in cases when you missed out to identify the symptoms of such condition, there are several treatments for dog mange that you as the pet owner can just do yourself or with the assistance of your veterinarian.
Localized dog mange or initial diagnosis can be treated with topical medication. The simple therapy requires shampooing and an oral medication. There are available special-cleansing shampoos especially designed for the dog’s skin condition. It helps remove hair follicles before the oral dip. Another treatment would be the use of chemical based lotions containing Amitraz, Ivermectin, and Selamectin. However, for generalized dog mange condition or a more serious infection, it is best to consult the veterinarian for a serious diagnosis and prescription of strong antibiotics for your dog.
Once the symptoms of dog mange are present in your pet, bring the dog immediately to the veterinarian for diagnosis of the type of dog mange and the intensity of the skin condition. For a localized Demodectic Mange, the doctor may prescribe medicated shampoo such as the one mentioned above. Dipping and antibiotics are needed for generalized Demodectic Mange. The use of Amitraz proves to be highly effective in treating Demodectic Mange.
If the dog is diagnosed with scabies or Sarcoptic Mange, you will need to isolate your dog from other animals and the members of the household to refrain from getting contaminated. Clean their beddings or place the dog in a sanitary kennel in the meantime to keep the disease from spreading. Your veterinarian may prescribe a number of drug treatments or medications for your dog. Selamectin dipping medication is effective but this is only available to certain countries. Another effective remedy is the Sulfurated lime rinse which is applied either weekly or bi-weekly.
Veterinarians will always advise pet owners to take good care of their pets and treat them well. Dogs that follow proper hygiene are resistant to illnesses and health complications. You would rather want to prevent your pet dogs from contracting unwanted skin diseases by following your vet’s advice.
Keep your pet dog clean and healthy by giving him a regular bath and grooming. And love your pet; they will feel the affection and will feel great about it.
